A Nutty Week & 5 For Friday!

This has been a week I will never forget! The weather has been crazy, my allergies have been crazy, and my firsties have been STIR crazy! We even had a coyote on the playground one day...Is it a full moon?!

Today, I'm linking up (one day late, because I needed a break last night) with Doodle Bugs Teaching to share 5 things from this week in my classroom:

1.  Froot Loops graphing: Throughout our CCSS unit on interpreting data, my students had the chance to get hands on with some Froot Loops the day we introduced bar graphs. Gotta love the collaborative work! (And Froot Loops are peanut and tree nut free for those of you who need that!)

2. Hundreds Chart: Also during our "interpreting data" unit, we practice the concept of more and less. Here, my students are using a *giant* hundreds chart to find patterns in the numbers and find "one more" and "one less" than given numbers. They LOVED being able to choose a number themselves and quiz their friends.

3. Dice Game: After using the ginormous hundreds chart, we broke off into groups to roll dice and find "one more" and "one less" of the numbers we rolled. These foam dice are so fun and CHEAP! I use them in centers, during math time, and for free time as well! Find them, along with a lot of other cool, cheap manipulatives { here }!

4. Another great resource for teaching about the hundreds chart can be found { here }!!
I use these interactive hundreds charts in my room to reinforce concepts. The "splat square" hundreds chart is a *favorite* of my students. It has fun sound effects and lots of colors to point out patterns on the chart and show more and less in a very concrete way!

5. This last one's for me: I started setting up my Halloween things this week. My favorite holiday is only a month away! I'm just starting but here's how my mantle looks so far.

Celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day!

What a day on Friday! We had a 1/2 day of school *and* celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday. His actual birthday isn't until September 26th, but we always celebrate the Friday before.

Not only did we do the usual "dress up as Johnny" and "wear a pot on your head", bring an apple for snack, but we also did some super cute activities from Cupcake for the Teacher! You can check out her Johnny craftivities { here } !

We started the day with an apple experiment: smell, touch, taste, sound, and feel. Then we hypothesized which liquid would preserve an apple from turning brown best: water, pop, lemon juice, or milk. Our results were......LEMON JUICE!

We then watched a Discovery Education video about Johnny Appleseed.

Last, we created our own Johnny, complete with facts and a page that students wrote "I think Johnny Appleseed was important because..."

My favorite was "because he planted apple seeds and was a good guy."

We created a Johnny Appleseed hat and ended the day with a graph: "How Do You Like to Eat Your Apples?" Obviously, apple pie was the winner!

Monday Motivation 9/16/13

Hello everyone! Another week has begun and another Monday is here!!! I'm linking up with Principal Principles and First Grade Buddies this week to bring you some good juju for the week!

I have always been a huge Harry Potter fan (the first book came out when I was in 6th grade and I fell in *love*!) That being said, I'm starting this week with a little J.K. Rowling motivation!!!

Starting a brand new reading series , aligning to the common core, being collaborative and creative, new firsties getting into the routine - it's all starting to take its toll! I know that if I keep up my nerve...I CAN DO IT!

EEK! I can't wait for my new blog design to be up *hopefully* this week! Keep in touch!!

I started blogging to help share some of my creative ideas and as an outlet to reach out to teachers that aren't in my district.

My favorite subject to teach is science because I love watching my student doing hands on experiments! They always seem to have those wide eyes during science!!!

3. Describe your teaching style.
I'm a hands-on, everyone-is-unique, routine and consistent, rule follower kind of teacher!

4. Give three interesting facts about you.
1. Halloween is my favorite holiday. My classroom becomes transformed!

Sunday Morning Thoughts, and lots of pictures!

Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!

Happy September! My favorite season is upon us! I've been filling my house with pumpkin scents and pumpkin drinks! I'm so happy to have this long Labor Day weekend to spend with friends and family, too!

Today I wanted to share a few photos in a sort of "Sunday Smorgasboard" sort of way...

{First} - I had the pleasure of attending a housewarming party last night for my friend of 13 years! Since she and her husband had already lived together for several years, I wasn't quite sure what to bring. HOME GOODS TO THE RESCUE!! I found this great ceramic lantern for her to use in her *huge* backyard! I attached a bow and a note and voila! She loved it!

{Second} - The hubs and I are headed up to Michigan today for another little *lakehouse* housewarming/Labor Day party, so here is the second adorable lantern I bought! Two birds, one stone...just the way I like it!

{Third} - I recently received a Yankee Candle coupon and ran to the store to purchase an electric tart burner. I've wanted one for so long, but it kept slipping my mind every time I was at the mall! Isn't it cute?! Double score, the tarts were all on sale for $1.00 each. "Cozy Sweater" is a great fall scent and brand new for the season!

{Fourth} - If you know me at all, you know I love two things: 1.) Halloween 2.) Harry Potter. I'm such a Potterhead that I *may* even have a tattoo of a Harry Potter spell (gasp!)....While shopping for bracelets for some children in China (long story), I came across this Hogwarts bracelet. I'm obsessed and I know my students will love it, too!

{Fifth and last} - Last Sunday my husband and I had the pleasure of attending the Chicago concert at Ravinia (in Illinois). Long story short, we had VIP access and were able to watch the show from the side of the stage. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE WAY TO END THE SUMMER!!! Here's a shot of me and my friend, Jennifer!
